The problem is all the shelters neuter many of them before we adopt.

So few talk about this subject. An old school Vet once told me, he only sees joint problems in neutered dogs, not in the intact ones. There are Vets that do vascectomies and tube ligation for sterilization that leaves hormones intact for health benefits.

How do you know how much to feed each of your dogs. For example, I have an elder girl Golden Retriever who I have on a weight maintenance diet as she’s slowed right down in her activities, and she needs to keep her weight down for her hips . I also have a very fast growing 6 month old Cane Corso who is already 82+ lbs and growing daily fast. His expected weight will be somewhere around 125 lbs. , so he needs a totally different amount (for now), but once he is 12 months, I’m guessing that amount may drop slightly. Is their a guide line to follow?

Do their symptoms get worse then better? I gave one dose and my dog starting chewing his toes, unable to walk because he wanted to scratch his ears every second, he couldnt stop scratching and biting for 2 weeks straight. im scared to start him on it again. I also heard fruits (sugars) and fish oil can make it worse? He gets omega 3 oils for his joints and loves eating fruit in between meals. If anyone knows anything please let me know your experience

I wish I could afford to feed nothing but human-grade homemade dog food. I can’t. Many others can’t. Think about how many more dogs will be sent to shelters and euthanized if home-made food is the only option? I did rescue, fostered many dogs, and depended on kibble. I’m appalled that these companies are selling this stuff. All I can do is try and find a safer brand of kibble, and continue to feed part kibble. and part home-made dog food. Not a great solution, but one that I can reasonably implement.

This is a vital skill! My service dog’s school taught us how to do CPR and the Heimlich - and how to adapt it for our disabilities if we aren’t physically able to flip our Labs upside down and had nobody nearby to help. (Dr. Judy, that might be a good follow up video demonstration aimed at people who are older or disabled.) Having these skills and a way to adapt with my physical issues saved my boy’s life. Hughie started choking on a piece of dental treat - it was slightly too large and just slid back down his throat quickly, right in front of me while he was on my bed. It happened so quickly. I couldn’t physically flip him upside down, and my medical aide froze with fear and was entirely useless, but fortunately the training I had several years prior kicked into high gear. The first thing I realized immediately is how crucial it is to stay calm as my boy was choking and looking at me like, “halp maybe?!” If I got excited and didn’t keep him calm, he would have freaked out and made matters worse. So I made directly eye contact and happily and calmly told him, “I’m gonna fix it, it’s okay!” with words he’d understand - and I repeated every so often as I tried to assist him. I checked his airway, but I couldn’t feel the piece of Whimzees because it got lodged down too far. So I immediately started banging on his chest wall the way the service dog organization taught me. I was admittedly starting to sweat a bit when nothing was happening - but he kept trying to cough it up as I kept banging as hard as I could on the front and sides of his chest as I was taught. As two minutes of me banging on his chest started approaching, it started to look like my boy was going to pass out, but I kept saying, “it’s almost fixed - we got this!” to him to keep him calm and his attention with me. And just as his eyes started rolling back a little, I gave him a giant hard bash, and all of a sudden he coughed that darn piece of treat flew out. Thankfully no CPR was needed in the end. The punchline is that Hughie wanted to immediately eat that piece of treat once he caught his breath. That’s how I knew he was ok, lol. But of course, I was like, “nah, I think we’ve had enough of this right now!” Even when you think the dog or cat is okay after assisting them, always get the dog checked by a vet because they might have injuries inside the airway or elsewhere that you can’t see. Going forward, I taught Hughie a way of preventing any piece of dental treat from sliding back accidentally. After he bites off a piece with his back teeth, I taught him to spit it out so he can reposition it more safely in his mouth instead of it accidentally sliding back immediately after biting off a piece with his back molars. It’s an added bit of safety precaution that has worked well and wasn’t too difficult to teach him. Never was I ever so grateful that the service dog organization thought to show us how to do this with our disabilities - you always hope you won’t need to employ life saving skills, but my boy is still here with me 5 years after this incident occurred. He’s 9.5 years old and still a healthy, happy service dog. I implore everyone with an animal of any kind to learn how to help them. Learn CPR, Heimlich and some basic first aid skills. If you don’t feel confident from watching a RUclips video, you can take an online course for dogs/class for $25 from the American Red Cross, ask your vet’s office to teach you, ask friends to learn along with you, etc. Also keep an up to date pet first aide kit where it’s easily accessible during an emergency. You should have one in your car, each floor of your house, in a backyard in a weatherproof box, and at the homes and cars of people you frequently encounter. The service dog organization also recommended that no matter the size of our dog, we should have something rigid/strong to carry our dog if the g-d forbid had a bad fall or got hit by a car so they can be moved without causing any further injury. I’ve seen foldable backboards of sorts. They also make slings to carry even fairly large dogs on a person’s back when the dog may have broken/injured a limb, have dehydration, etc. Be prepared!

Dr Judy are you familiar with megaesophagus in dogs? My 3yo Boston Terrier was diagnosed 2 months ago. Got through one bout of aspiration pneumonia and currently fighting another. He's lost so much weight. I ordered raised right to try. He's on a food that I do not want him on but it's the only thing I can get him to keep down so far. I'm at a loss on what to do for him.. I'm nervous about trialing all the different medications. I ordered cbd oil and mushroom tincture. Praying that helps the inflammation.

The town where I live has been reporting that all the municiple wells have been contaminated by glyphosate for years. And organic farms in the area are also finding their well water testing as having glyphosate. They can't filter all the water they use for crops and livestock, so even organic farms are contaminated with glyphosate. So, it's in the aquifer in our area. We have one of the nation's highest number of acres of organic farmland, in this and the surrounding counties, so that's a lot of organic farms that are contaminated with glyphosate. It's in organic food. Even if you don't use it on your own property, and eat all organic, you can still be exposed to it. I've been using Shilajit in my dog's food. Shilajit contains up to 80% fulvic acid, and also contains humic acid, which is supposed to help detoxify from glyphosate. My understanding is that you feed 1 to 1.5 mg. per pound of body weight for a dog. I just mix it in the batch of homemade dog food that I make at the time of making it because I don't want to have to be dividing up a 1000 mg. capsule for three little dogs every day. I've also started adding chlorella to their dog food, which also helps detoxify from glyphosate. But my dogs hate the taste of chlorella, so I only use a tiny amount in their dog food. Supposedly spirulina also helps to detoxify from glyphosate, but if I even put the tiniest pinch of spirulina in their dog food, they turn their noses up at it. I've tried both green spirulina, and blue spirulina, and they won't eat either. But at least I can get a little chlorella into them.
